Homework-Home/School Connection

We use homework journals in first grade to do homework.  Homework sheets will be sent in your child's journal at the beginning of each month.  We ask that you select one assignment to do each night from the bingo sheet and complete the assignment in their journal. Homework assignments will be graded every Friday morning.  Students who completed homework and turn it in on Friday will be awarded one extra credit point to their language arts and math grades.

Homework is meant to be a review of content learned in school.  Your involvement with your child on their homework is aimed to support what they are learning about.  Thank you for taking the time to support your child's education.

Our first homework will be distributed in September.  Here is a copy if you need it.

Popcorn Words

Each week we will learn four to five new sight or popcorn words.    Popcorn words are high frequency words or words that "pop" up a lot in written material and many follow irregular spelling patterns that are difficult to decode.  Learning these words will make learning to read an easier process for students as they will learn to recognize these words automatically thus having to decode significantlly less when reading as 50-75% of written material is made up of these words.

Below you will find a word list which third graders should be proficient at reading.  If they are not, I encourage you to use some of the games listed below them to practice or spelling games from the Phonics and Langugage games page of the website to practice.
